1.Please give us a quick introduction of yourself.

My name is Peter, and I am the salesperson in charge of advertising sales at Buzzvil. In college, I actively participated in a start-up club called ‘Corporate Research Meeting’, which got interested in the start-up field. In graduate school, where I could learn about business models and start-up consulting, the main concentration of my studies were mostly related to start-ups and ventures. What I learned in business start-up lectures is that business in not just about theory, but something that has to be learned through real life experience. This is main reason I currently work for Buzzvil.  Honestly, when I was in college, I vaguely dreamed about becoming a marketer or a business planner. That was only until I learned about the importance of field business, just like the famous quote of Suk-Yul Han in Misaeng, saying “Well, it’s field work after all”. It is pointless to discuss business items and market size only in theory. Selling just one of my products to a single customer can be more important than the projected sales figures in business plans. Such thoughts became even clearer as I went to graduate school, and those thoughts led me to become a Buzzvil salesman.   Come to think of it, I remember doing sales work for some online video English service during one of the breaks in college with a friend. I remember distributing flyers, from the break of dawn, to students in every single high school in Daejeon. Before long, I had the opportunity to have a presentation at a start-up contest. I remember that the judge was happier about the way I presented than about the content of the business item. He told me that I could be a great salesman. My interest in sales may have unknowingly started since then. I started my first job at Chosun Biz, an advertising team of online economic media. At Chosun Biz, I was in charge of communication and advertisement contracts with numerous companies at the access points of the reporters. I felt like my work on advertisement sponsorship business in Chosun Biz was just the right job for me. This is the main reason I now work for advertisement contracts in the sales team of Buzzvil.

2. What brings you to Buzzvil?

I was fortunate enough to get acquainted with Buzzvil, thanks to Head Hunter. I went through quite a lot of interviews to join Buzzvil. One of the interviewers was Psy(sales team leader). In fact, I have once thought that I got accepted to Buzzvil, thanks to my connections with Psy. This was because my backgrounds were not at all relevant to digital advertisement. However, it turned out that Psy rejected me, and it was actually John who accepted me. Anyhow, I did not want to let down John, so I put a lot of effort into my field business, which happens mostly outdoors (Not that I want to avoid him). The funny part is that I was actually concerned about joining Buzzvil at first. However, I met Young and Joey at the second interview, and they were such nice people. I loved their kind words and eyes, which in result led me to finally decide to join the start-up. At the time, I really wanted to work at a company with kind people. I remember telling Young and Joey at the second interview that I could do sales work even if I had to sell noodle at Buzzvil, if it was with such good people.

3. What is your role at Buzzvil?

I work at the advertising sales team at Buzzvil. My job is to receive numerous different advertisements through meetings and communications with major players in the advertising industry, such as media representatives, advertising agencies, and advertisers. I am especially responsible for advertisements pertaining to commerce, mobile service, automobiles, and electronics. Simply put, my job is to introduce products according to the advertiser’s KPI. It is my daily routine to make numerous cold calls and send emails of suggestion, in order to win new advertisements. Sales work include two different activities: searching for new businesses + managing existing business relationships. In my case, I focus more on searching for new companies.

4. How does it feel to work at a startup? or advertising industry?

The authority given to me is huge. Those who work in advertising industries need to be able to make quick decisions every day, due to continuous and countless mails and issues. The structure of advertising industries is less of a hierarchy, which is the usual case of companies in general. That is why I alone get to make decisions and external communications in 90% of the cases. At times, such structure of authority is burdening, but I like its convenience.   One of the most enjoyable moments working in the advertising industry is when the advertisement models I won over for contract are attractive female models such as Twice, I.O.I, or IU (in a serious tone). Would there be anything more pleasing for the user than for them to see charming celebrities in numerous contents and advertisements on their lock screens? I do not believe so (in a serious tone again).

5. Is there something that you can say “this is the best part being Buzzvillians”?

One thing I like mostly about Buzzvil is that nobody comes looking for me even when I am not in the office. I really like this… for real. Due to the nature of sales work, there is much more outside time than office time. Buzzvil does not meddle with whatever I do outside. So maybe those who work on different floors may not see me even once a month. Some even thought I quit. Furthermore, Buzzvil is full of workers who express their feelings just as they are and search for their own work to do, rather than to just wait for instructions. Although this is hard to believe, it is very true. Although I do not stay at the company building very often, I still get inspired by their enthusiasm and energy. I try to become a more self-directed person as well.

6. Do you have a personal goal or dream? If so, how does your experience at Buzzvil help you?

Currently, I work for an advertisement business. However, my main areas of interest is entertainment and TV shows. In fact, I want to produce and manage media contents about celebrities, which I like more than I like business models. So, I want to do related business in the future. While working at Buzzvil, I was able to meet lots of different people working in various different fields of business. When I get to meet those who work in the entertainment industry, I get to learn a lot about their business, and that is truly energizing for me. Of course, I will have to think through more about my plans on the format of business. I strongly believe that those who work for what they love are the happiest.
