Buzzvil People took the opportunity to introduce each Buzzvillians with a variety of backgrounds, personality, and thoughts. If you are wondering how best colleagues in Buzzvil are gathering to create the best team, if you are curious about each of the colorful Buzzvillians, please pay attention to Buzzvil People.
1. Please give us a quick introduction of yourself.
Hello, I go by the name ‘Ethan’ at Buzzvil and my real name is Yoo Yeong-hyeok. First of all, my career is in the area of development, and I’m currently working on developing clients for Android. I have a lot of curiosity and interest in developing, so I usually read materials on developing, or work on coding when I have free time. Other than that, I like to travel and listen to music, and I also enjoy scuba diving although I can’t do it often.
2. What brings you to Buzzvil?
Hmm. I don’t know where to start. Well, I was feeling quite dissatisfied at my previous workplace. Rather than thinking about what kind of codes are better or how to develop a good app, the company was preoccupied in copying and pasting within the set deadline. So I started looking for somewhere I could work on developing more seriously, and I decided to change jobs. Right then, I found Buzzvil at a recruiting website.
At first, I was wondering why it had such a high company evaluation grade. That was how I started out. Then I read reviews and the company blog, and the more I learned about the company, the better it seemed. After doing the interview and talking to the people there, I thought that this company is the one for me.
To be honest, I think timing had been the key player. Life is all about timing, isn’t it?
3. What is your role at Buzzvil?
Basically, I’m charge of many different jobs related to our Android products, especially the products that provide ads on Buzzvil’s unique lockscreen ad unit. If there are any customer inquiries, I also dig into the problem and fix the bug, and I also carry out projects on developing new functions. Nonetheless, the job that I contributed in the most ever since I started working here was the re-factoring work. I made improvements to complicated logic in the basic structure, and based on this, I created the overall system structure. So I currently work in the client team, as well as the architecture task force team that takes care of the client system structure of Buzzvil.
4. How does it feel to work at a startup? or advertising industry?
To be frank, I think it’s hard for me to make a generalization because Buzzvil is the only experience I have in working at a startup or advertisement company. With that said, I will jot down what I think.
With regards to the startup aspect, the work system is quite horizontal. At Buzzvil, the executive board doesn’t give out projects after making all the decisions themselves. For every project, many of the Buzzvilians related to the project take part in the decision making process. During that process, we communicate to each other to decide on how to carry out the project. I think the reason we follow this system is because of the idea that people that are experts in the field are the ones that actually work in that field. Thanks to this, you can really spread your wings in the field that you are the best at. (Laughs)
On the other hand, I think there is a lot of brain struggle because we are in the advertisement industry. We don’t simply manufacture a product and sell it to the consumers, but instead, we need to create a cash flow according to the interests of all three parties, including the consumers, media and advertisers. If you look at the internal ecosystem, you can see that there are so many intelligent people out there in the world. Of course, there are plenty of those kinds also at Buzzvil.
5. Is there something that you can say “this is the best part being a Buzzvillian”?
I think the greatest asset that we have at Buzzvil is the people. I don’t know how we have been gathered like this, but everyone here has amazing work skills. And bonus for being the nicest people, too. Because these people are here to support me, I also tend to achieve higher than my normal skills.
On top of that, I think what allows the company to achieve so well is the work structure and leadership. There is an old saying, ‘He who touches pitch shall be defiled therewith.’ Likewise, people are easily integrated into their surrounding environment. That is why the work culture is influential in creating the work atmosphere and the workers’ attitude. I cannot summarize this in just one sentence, but the work culture at Buzzvil encourages a very positive type of work culture. The leaders at Buzzvil value the work culture and they strive hard to keep it up.
6. Do you have a personal goal or dream? If so, how does your experience at Buzzvil help you?
My personal goal is to create a product that can benefit a large number of users. Some of the ways to achieve that is to create such a product myself, or to take part in a product development project. However, the most important thing is to create a product that can influence many people in positive ways, and to construct a stabilized system to support that.
With regards to that, Buzzvil is a company that gives me the opportunity to grow.
Buzzvil highlights the opinions of every individual working at the company, and tries to give the workers a high level of freedom as long as it is rational. In fact, while working here, I had the chance to adopt technologies that I thought were needed, and modify or eliminate existing parts that I thought were unnecessary. This gives me incentives to grow, as I have a larger scope of work freedom compared to other conservative companies.
Not only that, Buzzvil is composed of skilled experts in the field, so I learn a lot from various domains. In particular fields, I can easily learn priceless knowledge, and since many people actively share their knowledge, the workplace itself becomes a learning hub.
Therefore, I am certain that my experience at Buzzvil will help me develop a good product either at Buzzvil or outside.
